SYNOPSIS

Released in 1976, Disappointment-Hateruma is an early collaborative work by Ryuichi Sakamoto and percussionist Toshiyuki Tsuchitori, recorded before Sakamoto’s solo debut and the formation of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Far removed from the refined electronic and orchestral language he would later become known for, the album explores free improvisation, prepared piano, percussion, synthesizer, voice, and environmental sound with a deliberately open and unpredictable approach. Rather than following conventional song structures, the music develops through texture, space, repetition, and spontaneous interaction, moving between avant-garde jazz, contemporary composition, minimalism, and electroacoustic experimentation. Raw, challenging, and deeply exploratory, Disappointment-Hateruma captures Sakamoto at a formative stage, when his musical identity was still taking shape, while already revealing his lasting interest in the relationship between acoustic sound, electronics, rhythm, and the surrounding environment.
