Basra

PETE LA ROCA

TRACKLIST

SYNOPSIS

Released on Blue Note Records in 1965, Basra is the debut album by American jazz drummer Pete La Roca. Featuring Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Steve Kuhn on piano, and Steve Swallow on bass, the album moves between hard bop, modal jazz, and more adventurous improvisation. From the driving rhythms of “Malagueña” to the hypnotic, atmospheric title track, Basra showcases La Roca’s distinctive approach to rhythm and the quartet’s remarkable interplay. Long regarded as an overlooked gem in the Blue Note catalog, it remains a compelling example of the exploratory spirit of mid-1960s jazz.
