SYNOPSIS
Recorded in 1969 and released on Strata-East in 1972, Clifford Jordan in the World is a standout recording from tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, featuring an extraordinary lineup that includes Don Cherry, Kenny Dorham, Julian Priester, and Wynton Kelly. Rooted in post-bop but open to the freedom and experimentation of the avant-garde, the album strikes a compelling balance between structured compositions and adventurous improvisation. The nearly 17-minute “Vienna” is a particular highlight, unfolding through rich horn arrangements, shifting textures, and inspired interplay. Throughout the record, Jordan's warm, expressive tone remains unmistakable, bringing a strong sense of melody and blues feeling to even the most exploratory passages. An essential early release from Strata-East, the album captures both Jordan's distinctive musical voice and the spirit of creative independence that defined so much of the jazz scene at the time.
